Day 2 Old & New Delhi in Depth +

Full day exploring Delhi's two distinct identities: the Mughal-era density of Old Delhi (Red Fort exterior, Jama Masjid, a rickshaw ride through Chandni Chowk) contrasted against the colonial grandeur of New Delhi (India Gate, government buildings along Rajpath).

Visit Humayun's Tomb, the architectural ancestor of the Taj Mahal, with time to appreciate the garden layout that would later define Mughal funerary architecture.

Leisurely lunch at a celebrated Delhi restaurant.

Evening at leisure at The Imperial — the hotel's 1911 Bar and gardens are highly recommended.

Day 3 Drive to Agra — Check-in at The Oberoi Amarvilas +

Late morning departure for Agra by private vehicle (approximately 3.5–4 hours via the Yamuna Expressway).

Check into The Oberoi Amarvilas, where your room offers a direct view of the Taj Mahal.

Afternoon at leisure to enjoy the hotel's pool, spa, or simply the view from your own balcony.

Early sunrise visit to the Taj Mahal — your second viewing, this time at dawn, allowing you to compare how dramatically the monument's appearance shifts with the light.

Return to the Amarvilas for a leisurely breakfast.

Mid-morning visit to Agra Fort, with your historian-guide detailing the imprisonment of Shah Jahan by his own son within sight of the monument he built.

Optional evening visit to a marble inlay workshop to see artisans practising the same techniques used on the Taj itself.

About This Journey

There is the Golden Triangle, and then there is the Golden Triangle done at the level of the Oberoi and Taj hotel groups — two of the finest hospitality names in the world, both born in India and both still operating some of their most extraordinary properties along precisely this route. This itinerary exists for travellers who have already decided that this trip should be remembered as one of the great journeys of their life, not simply a well-organised holiday.

Seven nights and eight days gives us enough time to slow down meaningfully — to add a sunset Taj Mahal viewing in addition to sunrise, to spend a full free afternoon at each property simply enjoying the hotel itself, and to bring in details that only become possible when budget is not the primary constraint: a personal historian-guide who stays with you for the entire week rather than rotating between groups, private after-hours access arrangements where available, and dining experiences curated around your preferences rather than a fixed hotel menu.

What “Luxury” Actually Means on This Itinerary

We want to be specific about what separates this tour from our Classic Golden Triangle itinerary, because the difference is not cosmetic. First, every hotel on this route is either an Oberoi or a Taj property — The Imperial New Delhi, The Oberoi Amarvilas in Agra (the only hotel in the world where every room has a Taj Mahal view), and the Taj Rambagh Palace in Jaipur, a genuine former royal residence rather than a hotel built to resemble one. These are not upgrades from a standard itinerary; they are destinations in their own right, the kind of properties where guests sometimes choose to simply stay an extra day rather than rush to the next city.

Second, this itinerary is built around a single, dedicated historian-guide for your entire week, rather than separate local guides handed off in each city. This matters more than it might initially seem — by day three, a guide who has spent two full days with you already understands what genuinely interests you, whether that is Mughal court intrigue, the engineering of marble inlay work, or the textile traditions of Rajasthan, and tailors every subsequent conversation accordingly rather than delivering the same script to every guest.

Delhi — An Imperial Welcome

Your week begins at The Imperial, a hotel that has hosted the negotiations of Indian independence and counts world leaders, royalty and literary figures among its historic guest list. The art deco interiors, original 1930s artwork and palm-lined gardens set the tone immediately: this is not simply a place to sleep between sightseeing, but part of the experience itself.

Your Delhi exploration takes the full historical arc of the city seriously — Old Delhi’s Mughal-era density, contrasted against New Delhi’s colonial grandeur — but with the pace relaxed enough to include a proper sit-down lunch at one of the city’s celebrated restaurants rather than a quick bite between stops, and an evening at leisure to enjoy The Imperial’s own bars and gardens, widely considered among the most beautiful in the capital.

Agra — Every Room Faces the Taj

The Oberoi Amarvilas deserves its reputation as one of the great hotels of the world. Built less than 600 metres from the Taj Mahal, every single room, suite and even the pool deck offers a direct, unobstructed view of the monument — a deliberate design choice that means you can watch the Taj’s marble shift colour throughout the day without leaving your room. We schedule both a sunrise and a separate, quieter sunset viewing here, because the monument genuinely looks like two different buildings depending on the light, and most visitors only ever see one version of it.

Beyond the Taj itself, this leg includes Agra Fort and, for guests who want it, Fatehpur Sikri — but with enough flexibility in the schedule that an afternoon can simply be spent at the Amarvilas’s spa or poolside if that is what the day calls for. Luxury, in our experience, is as much about not having to rush as it is about the thread count of the sheets.

Jaipur — A Real Maharaja’s Palace

The Taj Rambagh Palace is not a replica or a hotel “inspired by” royal architecture — it was the actual residence of the Maharaja of Jaipur until the 1950s, and the current Maharaja’s family retains a connection to the property today. Polo lawns, peacocks wandering manicured gardens, and suites that were once private royal apartments make this the single property on the entire Golden Triangle route most likely to make guests describe their trip as “the best hotel stay of my life.”

Your Jaipur days balance the essential sights — Amber Fort, City Palace, Hawa Mahal — with deliberately unhurried time, including a private shopping experience with a specialist who can navigate the city’s renowned gem and textile markets on your behalf, sourcing items directly from trusted artisan families rather than tourist-facing storefronts.

A Week, Not a Checklist

With an extra night woven into this itinerary compared to our classic route, we are able to build in genuine rest — an afternoon with nothing scheduled, an additional cultural experience added only if you want it, and meals planned around your preferences rather than hotel banquet defaults. Every element below can be adjusted before departure; this is the starting structure, not the final word.
